In some cases, they may arrive earlier, while in others, their arrival may be slightly delayed.
It is important to understand that whale sharks migrate to the waters of the Yucatán Peninsula primarily in search of their main food source, plankton. Therefore, their presence depends on environmental conditions that influence plankton abundance.
Generally speaking, the best time to experience a higher concentration of whale sharks—often more than 20 individuals per day—is from the last weeks of June through the first weeks of August.

- First, the search may take longer: Depending on the number of whale sharks in the area, the boat search can take more than 4 hours before finding them.
- As a result, more time may be spent on the open sea: Spending several hours on the boat can increase exposure to waves and other open-sea conditions, which may contribute to seasickness.
- Additionally, swimming opportunities may be limited: If only 1 whale shark is spotted, swimming with the shark may not be permitted, and the experience will be limited to observation from the boat.
- Furthermore, with 2 to 3 whale sharks in the area: Swimming opportunities may be limited to one entry into the water, depending on the circumstances and local regulations.
